In 1831, on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, a local shepherd found a small chamber of dry-built stone about 15 feet below the top of a sandbank that had been partially washed away by the sea. The chess pieces discovered within the chamber are the oldest complete set of chessmen ever found. Most recent evidence suggests the Lewis Chessmen are of Norwegian origin and date back to the twelfth century.
The Lewis pieces are on display in the British Museum and in the Museum of Edinburgh. Visiting either museum is a worthy experience but with these replica Lewis Chessmen, you can own a little piece of history yourself.
A lovely set of replica Isle of Lewis Chess pieces in cream and brown.
The chessmen are made from stone resin and feature a good amount of detail. The king height is 3.5 inch and all have felted bottoms. Sets from Berkeley are better quality than cheaper sets with crisper detailing and a slicker shadowing finish that results in a more genuine looking aging effect.
Please note that a Chess board is not included unless specified. We would recommend a board with 50 – 55mm squares for this Chess set.
Now on display in the British Museum and the National Museum of Scotland, the original pieces were discovered on the Isle of Lewis in 1831 and date back to the late 12th Century.
